Time is Relative, especially when you're spending it on a hobby you enjoy. This channel is created to primarily showcase watch reviews that I have created.
How Useful is it Really? A Practical Guide To Watch Complications
There are a ton of different watch complications out there, but which ones do you need and how useful are the rest? That's what we are going to talk about today in this continuation of the Practical Guide to Watch Collecting.
As this is a comprehensive discussion on every watch complication I've encountered. This is a long one. Stick with it as long as you can, or come back to reference it later.

My Kamanirskie is a Soviet version. No fancy back or dial for me . I love it 🤣🫡
Very interesting vid… always luv your style… 👍😎
But missed out Marvin The Martian talking watch complication… 🤷♂️
I love butterfly clasps! How can you not?
Thank you for such a well made review and tons of well made shots and clips of the actual watch! The concept of high accuracy wtih *sweeping seconds* is very intriguing to me. I love them. Are there any other non-mechanical-watches with the same accuracy and sweeping seconds???
In my opinion a compass bezel is a useless feature on a watch. If the Alpinist didn't have one I'd buy it!
Honestly? this is how you take a cheap casio and turn it into the digital version of a rolex explorer. This thing will last pretty much forever
Assemble in USA mean we buy the parts in China and put it together in the USA
Yup. Although I think it's important to point out that also means final QC and any servicing are also done in the USA. As well as this is no different then any "Swiss Made" watch at this price range. it's just the US's requirements on what is defined as "Made In" is a lot more strict then most places in the world. Which is good, you know more about what your getting.
It is not particularly beautiful, but looks different in a sea of similarities
It's definetly interesting. I just wish it didn't cost as much.
@@RelativeTime yeah, definitely. But makes me wonder how would CIGA as a brand continue, is this watch their enterence to a more premium brands?
@@macakucizmama831 I'm not sure. They they're kind of an interesting brand. Some of their watches are much more reasonably priced. But this one with the full ceramic seems a little crazy
I try to get my SanMartin watches from Amazon when possible even if it’s a few more dollars. Also eBay is good with the return policy
I didn't know anyone was selling them on Amazon. Have you tried Watchdives. I've had a few people recommend them to me.
Good review. I have this watch as a working watch. I am working at sea and can say you this watch are exellent. Actually, I am Omega and Breitling fan. I have both Omega's legendary models , but to compare seamaster and this watch, I can say this watch is good to compare with iconic Omega seamaster 300. How did Seiko with this price level, I have not understood. From my side, only one minus , this is thicknesses of the watch. Rest things are really good, not excellent , but really good.
SPB333’s pretty awesome too!
Thanks for the comprehensive, clear and BS-free video!
Glad it was helpful!
I learned from Shane that Miyota is CITIZEN
Thanks so much for the in-depth review on this one. I'll admit, it is a different looking watch, but that happens to be what I'd like a watch to look like...little on the bigger side, with some complexity to it. I happen to love the world time feature haha, the one the video maker doesn't like much. It takes 3 sec to do if you want the time in every zone and looks cool. Bought it on Jomashop and am currently awaiting its arrival. Hope the band is comfortable?
A coupe of comments; both dealing with dive watches oddly. First, while timing bezels definitely exist (see the Ares Mission Timer) dive watches have bezels intended to be elapsed timers, like the stop watch you mention later in the video. Align the pip to the minute hand when the dive begins and mentally record the elapsed time when you leave the bottom. The way you describe using it does not seem correct. If i align the minute hand with the five minute mark it won't reach the pip for 55min. You can you your dive watch like you describe but unfortunately there is a bit of 'rithmetic in the way. Since you included features I was shocked that you missed the most, statistically, useless feature of the helium escape valve. And that comes from a retired USN hard hat diver and Omega dive watch lover.
i love anidig. if designed correctly its a useful features for when you do want to time smt or check another timezone etc, but out of the way when not. when not in use mine is a day/date
Guys, are there any mods for A700 ?
Do you find yourself shaking and waving your hands more, just because you’re wearing..mm a rotor, basically? Haha @29:53 for example . Okay..let’s see how many times I’m going to hear “useless” on this opinionated vid… fun pictures though
Yeah... I said it a little too much. But when you make something this long you don't really realize it until you're editing it. I probably spent a little over 3 hours recording it over a couple of days.
wrt tritium, the decay is predictable, 1 f-stop about every 12 years. How many half-lives it is good for depends on the brightness you want and how much tritium you start with. For conventional lume, none of my vintage watches have any detectable glow now matter how you try to charge them. The current conventional lumes (Lumibright and Lumininova) were invented in the 1990's, so the very oldest examples are the same age as a tritium watch that's still got some life. Seiko describes their lume as "semi-permanent". Known aging factors include pigments to change the color, and humidity. For me, the purpose of lume is not to look pretty for a few minutes after a UV chargeup but to be legible if I wake up before dawn and the watch has not seen any natural light in maybe 12 hours. One tritium watch is enough for my collection, but that's the one I usually wear to bed, and take camping off grid.
I've never thought about it in terms of f-stop, but if you know cameras that's a pretty good analogy.
one more cool video of yours, but you have forgotten one type of watch...mechanical watches with annual calendar...much, much, much cheaper than a mechanical watch with a perpetual calendar, but with a nice practical complication...
I did. As long as this video is, there are a few other things I also forgot. Maybe I'll make a part 2 with those.
Amazing video, Sir! Comprehensive and objective run down on almost all complications out there. Definitely a reference video in UA-cam's horolosphere. Thanks for doing this and sharing.
I survived 20 years with a two hand JLC Reverso, it was my first proper watch. I've been through the watch years, chronos, annual/triple calendars, dual time, in the end I've concluded that two hands are all you need, that and good G-Shock.
Every first responder who does shift work or people that work in hospitals who do shift work, most of us don't have regular schedules so we frequently don't know what day of the week it is. My life revolves around a 6-day rotation. Two days working 4 days off. I hardly ever know what day of the week it is unless I look at my watch lol.
This is true. My wife often works nights (ER), and after a while, she may not know what day it is. So that's one exception where it's pretty useful.
Are those condoms on your fingers
Doesn't regular lume also die out in the same 30 or so year time period tritium would?
Well everything degrades eventually, and I would think the same is true with regular phosphorescent lume. However, I think it would be less predictable and more based on what conditions the watch has been through. Like the more time in the sun and the more it might have degraded. Whereas with tritium is very predictable and on a shorter time frame. Plus the trick with tritum is it depends on the watch and your eyes if it's still useful in that time frame. Like in 30 years, it will still have some glow, but will be 1/8 as bright as it was originally. So if you get a T25... which isn't very bright I don't think it will be much use after 12 years. But a T100... That might be ok for 20 some years. But remember it's constantly getting dimmer, and something you have to expect.
@@RelativeTime it seems fairly predictable with normal lume, too - if you're buying a 30-40 year old watch it almost definitely doesn't have functional lume.
For me the biggest detraction of a mechanical or automatic watch is the servicing cost, but I admire the people who does that as a hobby or as their work. The other thing is that they can make mistakes and ruin your watch, I like the mechanical watches with less complications. I only have two watches, a Citizen Calibre 8651 eco drive from 2005 and a Swatch Irony Chrono called Freezing Rain from 2000 (changed the strap as I didn't like the original), both are still working, I love the pointer date on the Citizen.
Thumbnail: COMPLICATD
Thanks... Although I'm amazed it took this long for someone to notice that. You are the first to say something.
Altimeter in Casio watches is very useful for hiking. You can keep track of elevation without draining your cellphone battery.
For those of us that communicate real-time internationally the GMT / UTC feature gets used often. I used to keep my single timezone analog watches set to GMT and just converted to local time. Was fun when someone tried to read my watch. But it is nice to have dual timezone when communicating internationally over the Amateur Radio Waves.
So far, I won't buy a watch without a date. In fact, I think day%date is even better. Now, a month indicator is probably overkill, true. I do have one of those. A screw-in crown is also kind of a must for me, as well.
I am with you 100%.
Great collection !
Thanks!
Best watch video ever. Thank you so much. This was so helpful.
Glad it was.
Quartz is what I reach for when there’s work to be done. But compared to a mechanical or auto it seems dead and lifeless. Like there was no love that went into its creation. However the opposite is true for autos and mechanics, there’s a paradoxical love that went into the creation of something not alive. Tho interestingly enough it’s not as reliable as a quartz, yet it feels again paradoxically more alive. I’m mesmerized by the strange power of an automatic movement, yet my citizen eco drive is my go to for day to day activities. As someone else said in the comment section said quartz for work mechanical for play. It’s hard to discount a creation of genuine genius for something better in every way. I don’t want to forget are past.
A bit aside, I cannot imagine a single advantage of having a quartz watch second hand advancing more than once per second.
With the percisionist it's really more for show. Looks cool, but it will drain a battery much faster.
Day-Date looks kinda pretty, I guess. But in reality, I could dispense with either. I work full time, so I am intrinsically aware of day of week. Day of month? I usually know anyway, to sign checks ? Both are nice, but actually just dial candy.
Thanks for this very informative video, Shane. I love my Arnie, but I have to admit I only use the analogue part. Maybe I’ll use the date window from time to time.
I just recently purchased the 1970 white/ice dial Willard version and it is absolutely stunning,it oozes quality all over,it’s running at around +5 which I’m delighted with,I’ve had it for 2weeks now and worn it every day,im really enjoying this watch,I bought it new at a fantastic sale price.
Great video Shane! I saw that Wise GMT. Is there a video coming for that?
Yup. Hopefully have it out in the next week or two.
Sounds good! I have the Jack Mason Strat-O-Timer. And I’m curious to see how they compare.
I started my watch collection during the height of the pandemic, so I tend to overvalue a day/date complication because there was a very real danger of forgetting which day of the week you were on. I continue to love them because a 12:00 day and 6:00 date adds a beautiful symmetry to the watch in a way that the Seiko Setup never could.
Great Video Shane Thank you. One useless but cool feature is the internal rotating compass bezel like on my Alpinist (:
Good call. There are a few others I've forgotten. So maybe I'll make a shorter part 2.
@@RelativeTime (:
About every 5 seconds is a mile (timing lightning).
You are right. I didn't grow up with many thunderstorms, so for some reason I was thinking it was 1.
Mechaquartz: Seiko VK chronographs, sure. But I've reas about Miyota 6S21, that it has mechanical action with the possibility of readjustment with pushers, like pure quartz does. I think that's gonna be my next chronograph.
Ah, another great installation from Professor Shane. I’m a pretty simple guy. I’m Date Only Guy, and that’s all I really like. Although I do like GMT’s. My oldest daughter lives in the Midwest (I’m in California) so I have my GMT set to two hours ahead. Although being Asian, I’m pretty good at math, and I can add “2” to any number and almost always get it right! Thanks for the great video! Oh and I like Casios of course.
I think a day and/or date is useful for a person with only one or two watches. For someone say, with more than that, I would argue that it’s a pain to be always setting one not worn for awhile.
20 dollars Casio has more usages than a 10,000 dollar Rolex just to be truthful.
Very true.
Just bought the blue one with kamasu II name. About 320e. Cant wait for next week to get it.
Really good summary. Your review was what helped me make the decision to buy this beautiful watch, which arrives in a week. Thank you so much!
Great discussion! Although I personally love pointer dates, I completely agree with your criticism.
I think they are cool too, but still a little harder to read. I'm still on the fence about getting an Oris Big Crown. It's a watch I keep thinking about.
I think you meant to say tritium rather than radium.
You will have to forgive me, It's been a while so I'm not 100% sure of the context. Although i'm guessing I said something about "old radium" lume. Which often causes confusion. "old radium" is a color of luminous paint. Made to have that old faded look during the day.
